National Forest Week (NFW) runs September 20-26, 2015. This year’s theme takes us back to the founding history of the initiative. NFW was established in 1922 as Forest Fire Prevention Week. The intent then was to encourage public awareness of Canada’s forests. At the time, the greatest threat to Canada’s forests came from forest fires, due mainly to human causes. Sound familiar? Since then National Forest Week, as it was renamed in 1967, evolved to encompass the many and varied human and environmental aspects of Canada’s forest resources – past, present and future. NFW’s objectives remain to challenge Canadians to learn more about their forest heritage and support greater recognition of this valuable resource.
