The province is giving three regions $9M to support efforts for economic diversification in the wake of the mountain pine beetle, which has chewed through 17.5M hectares of forest.
DERRICK PENNER, VANCOUVER SUN – APRIL 15, 2011
VANCOUVER – The province has committed $9M in assistance funding for communities dealing with the mountain pine beetle epidemic to help generate economic activity outside of the forest industry. Pat Bell, Minister of Jobs Tourism and Innovation, said the fund will deliver $3M, over three years, to each of the beetle-action coalitions that have been formed in the Omineca, Cariboo Chilcotin and southern interior regions. “The whole point of this funding envelope is to find new ways to drive Northern and regional economies,” Bell said in an interview. “And the $3M, the hope is people will be able to deploy those resources in a way to deliver on that objective.”
