These days, sounds of machinery and trees being cut down can be heard from the Alberni Community Forest block near the old West Bay Hotel.
Forestry trucks drive in, using a few roads and bridges that were built in June and July before the fire danger risk went up. After being delayed for a month by the extreme fire danger rating, which stayed until early October, local contractors are only now able to build new roads, re-activate old roads and harvest trees in the community forest.
