The long-awaited Alberni Valley Community Forest Corporation is moving from a handful of maps and a signed agreement to a working forest enterprise.
They’re now inviting the public to an open house on Feb. 3 at Sproat Lake Community Hall, to review and comment on the Forest Stewardship Plan, currently being compiled by Econ Consulting. The FSP is mandatory prior to beginning operations, according to Rachel Dalton, registered professional forester with Econ. “The management plan has already been completed, and that’s on the website [www.communityforest.ca], but you can’t apply for a permit until the stewardship plan is in place,” Dalton said. The FSP sets a baseline for environmental standards, spelling out the size of cuts, the type of silviculture that is used and recreational values, just to name a few, Dalton said.
