B.C. government sprays record number of hectares to kill pests

The B.C. government has aerial-sprayed a record 108,000 hectares this summer in the Interior to combat a massive and sustained budworm out-break that is wreaking havoc on valuable Douglas fir forests. More than 600,000 hectares of fir forest from Quesnel to the U.S. border have been hit by the native pest, said Lorraine Maclauchlan, provincial forest entomologist for the Thompson-Okanagan region. The 108,000 hectares were sprayed with Foray 48B – a biological bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis variety kurstaki – found naturally in the soil and known to be harmful to the budworm larvae.
